Where to start your yacht charter in Greece

Greece's charter areas start from different parts of the mainland and islands. Choose the area around the places you want to visit, then compare the actual departure and return bases on each yacht offer before arranging travel. Use the Catalog to check the offers for your dates. For a one-way charter, ask the operator to confirm the different return port and any related charges expressly in the selected offer.

In the Ionian, off Greece's western coast, Corfu and Lefkada offer different starting points. From Corfu, consider the island group around Paxi and Antipaxi; from Lefkada, look towards Meganisi, Kefalonia and Ithaca. Choose the start that fits your preferred islands rather than treating the whole Ionian as one itinerary.

For the Saronic Gulf, consider a start near Athens. Alimos Marina, on the Athenian Riviera, is a departure point for both the Saronic Gulf and the Cyclades. Tell us which area you want to sail so the shortlist and route discussion start from the same plan.

For the Cyclades, choose your must-visit islands before settling on a base. Lavrion, on the Aegean side of the Athens area, is another starting point to consider for islands such as Kea and Kythnos. The wider Cyclades include Paros and Naxos; discuss the passages, available sailing days and return plan with the operator or skipper.

For the Dodecanese in the southeastern Aegean, compare departure islands such as Kos and Rhodes. Check the departure and return island on each offer before arranging flights, rather than treating the whole group as one interchangeable base.

For the Sporades, look at Volos on the mainland when comparing departure bases. Skiathos, Skopelos and Alonnisos are island choices within this group. Match the offered departure and return base to your planned stops, including the passage back to the mainland.

Choose dates with the sailing area in mind

Greece's climate has a broadly warm, dry period from April to October, with regional differences. The hottest period is usually late July and early August. Use that seasonal pattern to discuss your group's preferences; it is not a forecast for a particular charter week.

The Etesians, or Meltemi, are northerly winds that can bring strong episodes to the Aegean between May and October. For a Cyclades plan, leave room to change stops and passages around the forecast. Ask the operator or skipper to assess the route for your dates and experience, including the return to base.

When deciding when to book, send your dates, group and preferred area for a shortlist once they are clear. Ask the operator to confirm availability and the payment and cancellation terms before you commit to the yacht or travel arrangements.

Choose the yacht and who will sail it

Start your yacht search with dates, group size and preferred starting area, then compare yacht type, cabins, berths and equipment. If you are considering a sailing yacht, catamaran or motor yacht, check the individual layout against your group: the berth total alone does not tell you who will share a cabin.

Bareboat means you take responsibility for sailing the yacht without a supplied skipper. Before choosing that arrangement, ask the charter company to confirm the experience and documents it requires for the particular yacht and cruising area. A certificate name alone is not confirmation that your booking can proceed.

With a skippered yacht charter, the skipper handles the sailing. Confirm whether the skipper is included in the offer or must be arranged separately, and agree the service scope and onboard arrangements. If you want cooking or hosting as well, make that a separate request so you know exactly which crew services are included.

Compare the complete charter offer

Compare yacht rental costs for the same dates, duration and departure area. Read the yacht's price breakdown and ask which charges are included, which extras are mandatory and which services are optional. Check separately what you will pay before departure and at the base.

For your planned Greek route, ask how fuel, mooring costs and any skipper or additional crew are handled. Confirm the security deposit amount, payment method and release conditions separately from the charter price.

If you want optional deposit insurance, ask whether it is offered for the selected yacht and dates. Request its exact terms in writing and confirm how it affects the security deposit; do not assume it is included in the charter price.

Before committing, review the payment schedule, cancellation terms, required documents, check-in and return arrangements with the charter company. Get these details in writing for the yacht and dates you choose.
